Chicago-area Hilton hotel workers ratify new labor contract

Union workers at local hotels operated by Hilton Worldwide Inc. have reached a five-year labor contract with the hotel chain more than four months before their existing contracts are set to expire.

Union compensation to rise $4.81 over 5 years in new Hilton pact

Six hundred unionized workers at the Drake, Palmer House, Chicago Hilton and Towers and the Hilton O’Hare will see their compensation increase by a total of $4.81 over the course of five years beginning September.

Just weeks after food service workers at O’Hare Airport released “Putting Sustainability on the Table: Airport Workers’ Vision for $3 Billion of Food and Drink at O’Hare”—a report in which they made recommendations to the City of Chicago on sustainable food concessions at the country’s second-busiest airport—the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) has announced a new Green Concessions Policy.

A massive rally on March 27, 2013, united people across Chicago who oppose the City’s plan to close schools, expand charters and eliminate good, middle class jobs. Thousands of people flooded the streets of downtown Chicago and 127 parents, students, school workers and community members were arrested. The protest was sponsored by UNITE HERE Local 1, SEIU Local 1, the Grassroots Education Movement and the Chicago Teachers Union.

Unions Unite, Issue Joint Report Against School Closings

Members and leaders of three unions representing workers in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system criticized the city’s recent round of school actions in a joint report issued Tuesday, saying school closings hurt children, struggling neighborhoods, and working families.

More than 125,000 households in Chicago – roughly 15 percent of the City’s population – include a member of the Chicago Teachers Union, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) or UNITE HERE. These union households are home to about 92,000 school aged children, an overwhelming number of who attend Chicago Public Schools.

Union urges McPier to assist with Hyatt contract negotiations

Representatives from United Here Local 1, the union whose members include hospitality workers at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Hotel, appeared before the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority Board again today to ask for its help in settling an ongoing contract dispute over raises and back pay.
